I am looking at a Rossi.38 special, black metal finish with walnut or rosewood grips. In unfired condition. Owner says it may be from the early 30s or 40s. Serial Number located on the bottom of the grips (the strip of metal separating the two grips) is clearly marked '234519'. Any idea if this is a vintage revolver? Let me take a few minutes to try and help - if I can. First and foremost a serial number on a gun is used to identify a single specific specimen. Much like fingerprints on a person a serial number on a gun. For example a Rossi Model 85 revolver with serial number 'N6523' identifies that exact (specific) gun. I am going to report it but I know that without the serial number nothing will happen. I know who stole it. It was the first gun I ever shot. I bought it in new 1983-1985 in Fort Worth Texas. Any ideas of the range of serial numbers would be a great help since the Rossi websiteis very vague about the serial numbers on older guns. Cyberlink free download. Taurus and Rossi Handguns. The Rossi Model 68 was introduced in 1978 and is an adaptation of the earlier Model 27 Pioneer revolver. Although almost identical to the Model 27, the Model 68 has some slight improvements, such as an adjustable rear sight and a ramp front sight. The Model 68 is chambered for the .38 Special round. This weapon is a close copy of the Smith and Wesson Model 36 and was produced under license from S&W on S&W machinery in Brazil.

I just bought this Rossi snubby from another INGO member, and I like to find out as much information as possible about used gun when I buy them.
This is a Rossi model 68S, as far as I can tell. When I go to the Blue Book of Gun Values, it talks about the Rossi model 68, and no other Rossi models fit the description of this gun. The Blue Book doesn't talk about a model 68S, but I saw a website that said that the model 68 was produced from 1978 until 1985, then the model 68S was produced from 1993 until 1998.
The left side of the barrel has the 'AMADEO ROSSI S.A.', the right side of the barrel has '.38 SPECIAL'. On the frame on the right side under the cylinder is the INTERARMS stamp, then the serial number AA132502. On the frame behind the cylinder yoke, it looks like 'M685' (Rossi didn't make a Model 685), so I'm thinking it's M68S.
Then there is some markings I don't understand. On the cylinder yoke is '5 9 88', and that also appears on the bottom of the frame when you remove the right grip. Also on the frame under the right side grip is the number 82 above and to the right of '5 9 88'.
On the frame under the left grip, it looks like 'XII.91' maybe, but the numbers to the right of the decimal look like they weren't struck well just the tops of them are visible. Also there is a number 6 perhaps above the 'XII.91'.
I have photos below. I know Remington puts different codes to identify barrels, chokes, the gunsmith who inspected it, repairs, etc. I was wondering if anyone knew what the markings on this Rossi were, and perhaps an approximate year or date of manufacture. Since Taurus bought Rossi, they don't answer any questions about the Rossis that were imported by Interarms.
Thanks for any input. BTW I'm giving this to my sister.
